It's A Bird... It's a Plane...
Hot Air Balloons!!!!
We woke up this morning to find that the annual Derby Festival Hot Air Balloon Race was not cancelled due to high winds, but it was taking place and tracking right over St. Matthew's where we live!
So of course we all went outside and had a great time watching the balloons fly by. We started by watching them from the front yard, but then realized that we could see them just as well from the deck in the back. So we spent a good while on the back deck this morning. The weather was beautiful, and I think we were the only people up and outside! What a great way to start a Sunday morning! See there are some wonderful things about always being up by 7:00 am :)

A More Serious Note Than Usual
We are so blessed to have found such a wonderful church here in Louisville. I have truly grown to love Clifton and will miss it so much when we are gone. One of the things that I appreciate most about our church is how the leadership takes every measure possible to be honest and clear about what the scriptures say. I have learned so much, not only from the wonderful teaching (let's be honest, with Bruce Ware as your Sunday School teacher and Tom Schreiner as your preaching pastor you would have to be pretty dense or sleep through every lesson to not gain insight and understanding of the scripture) but also from the examples set by the elders, deacons, and other church leadership.
Our music minister is battling cancer and it has been a true blessing to see how he and his wife are nothing short of absolutely joyful in the Lord through all of their trials. This is not to say that they do not pray for ease and healing, but they have taken what the Lord has given them and have found joy in their lot. What a wonderful example to us all of the peace and joy that can be found when you know that you belong to Christ.
We usually have a pretty "serious" service... compared to other churches I have been to. I really do think that it is because our leadership wants us to be very aware of the words that we are saying and the things that we are reading and studying when we sing praise and study the Word. I know that in the past I personally have been misdirected into thinking that church is a place to go to just feel good. You know what I am talking about. Services that are only "happy" from beginning to end with great music and a good life lesson and no mention of my shortcomings as a Christian, no mention of the pain and struggle that is inevitably a part of life. For me there is so much more true joy when I am reminded of how completely hopeless I am in my sin, when I am truly grieved by my sin, repentant and aware that the only means of forgiveness is through Christ, and then when I am able to rejoice in my forgiveness through the power of the Lord and my ultimate salvation! Thank you Clifton for allowing me the opportunity to be reminded of these things each Sunday.
I am sorry to go off on a soap box there, it just seems like lately I have seen so many examples of people not looking to the scripture and thinking things through before they just take what somebody told them was true as Truth... they are just looking for a way to feel better.... and then they end up being very confused about it later and wonder why they feel something "missing" from their Christian life.
Anyway, all that to say.... last week at church Chip was not able to lead us in worship because he was preparing for his stem cell transplant. We were all reminded of the ultimate hope and joy that can be found in Christ, however, by the words of this song. It has been on my mind all week as I have been so grieved by the news of Lilly Clair's death and burdened for Katie and Whit as they deal with the loss of their baby. Also we have just been flat out tired here at our house... just tired. But although I am tired and know that there is pain and great suffering all around us in this world I am so hopeful and joyful (even in death!) in the salvation that is given to me and my brothers and sisters in Christ through Christ and the ultimate glory that will be given to the Lord through all things!
"It Is Not Death to Die"
Original Words by Henri Malan (1787-1864). Translated by George Bethune (1847).
Music, Chorus, and Alternate Words by Bob Kauflin
It is not death to die,
To leave this weary road,
And join the saints who dwell on high,
Who've found their home with God.
It is not death to close
The eyes long dimmed by tears
And wake in joy before Your throne,
Delivered from our fears.
O Jesus, conquering the grave,
Your precious blood has power to save.
Those who trust in You
Will in Your mercy find
That is is not death to die.
It is not death to fling
Aside this earthly dust
And rise with strong and noble wing
To live among the just.
It is not death to hear
The key unlock the door
That sets us free from mortal years
To praise You evermore.
